About me

​

I live in Lincolnshire and started teaching chemistry in 1999, working in high-achieving state and independent schools since then.  I examined at A level for a major Board for 12 years and have taught a wide range of current specifications, so have an excellent insight into how to hit those marking points on GCSE, IGCSE and A level papers.  Prior to starting teaching, I completed my PhD in Inorganic Chemistry in Bristol, and worked in postdoctoral research in Grenoble, France.

Colchester Royal Grammar School: 1999-2015

​

I started at CRGS as a newly-qualified teacher in 1999, and worked my way up to becoming Deputy Headmaster (Curriculum) in 2008, via Head of Chemistry (2004) and Director - Science Specialism (2006).  Part of my Deputy Head's role, apart from overseeing the academic curriculum of the school and line managing a number of academic departments, was running the UCAS university application process, and I therefore have a good deal of experience on advising on personal statements, the general application process, and interviews.  At CRGS I also worked as a resident Assistant Boarding Manager for ten years, and had a great time running the school Quiz Club and Quizzes for the Parents' Association fundraising evenings.

Stamford School: 2015-2023

​

After seven years as Deputy Head at CRGS, I moved to Stamford as Head of Chemistry in 2015 as I wished to return to classroom teaching.  As well as my busy classroom and departmental role, I worked in boarding and was extensively involved with the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme at Bronze and Silver level.  I continued to indulge my love of Quizzing, running the School Quiz Club and staging numerous House Quiz competitions.

Dulwich College: 2023

​

A short fixed-term placement at Dulwich College, providing sabbatical cover teaching chemistry for the Michaelmas Term.

Stamford School: 2024 - 

​

From March 2024 I have returned to Stamford School to teach IGCSE and A level Chemistry part-time, whilst continuing with private online tuition.

What I can offer​

Offering online tutoring signals the beginning of another chapter in my teaching career. Since becoming a teacher I have always been dedicated to doing the very best for my students, being approachable, friendly, and producing high-quality resources for use in and out of the classroom, and giving my students in-depth support for them to achieve their utmost.  I have experience of teaching or tutoring GCSE, IGCSE and A level Chemistry.  In addition, I have a great deal of experience supporting students' applications to competitive universities, such as Oxbridge, Russell Group or US universities, and can provide application support and interview practice.

It is immensely satisfying to help students who have struggled with chemistry and see that 'lightbulb moment'!  In my tutoring I use fully worked examples, tailored resources, past exam questions and interactive techniques to bring out the hidden chemist in my students in an engaging and productive way.  Please contact me if you would like a free 15-minute chat.
